Coastal Blackbutt

Coastal Blackbutt is genuine Blackbutt veneer, not a decor, and the difference shows in the parts of a floor that are hard to fake: the way the grain runs continuously across a board, the occasional gum vein, the small variations in tone that no printed repeat reproduces.

Blackbutt is a pale golden-yellow to honey-brown hardwood with predominantly straight grain and a fairly clean face — no dramatic figure, no large knots. That restraint is exactly why it works so well over a large area. It gives a bright, even floor that makes rooms feel more open without the visual noise of a high-contrast species.

It is also the most Peninsula-appropriate timber in this range. Blackbutt was the standard hardwood through the postwar building boom, so it is what is already sitting under the carpet in a great many houses through Frankston, Seaford and the bayside suburbs. Laying a Blackbutt-veneered engineered floor in an extension of one of those homes gets you a genuine match to the original boards in the front rooms.

The timber is hard — Blackbutt sits around 9.1 kN on the dry Janka scale — so it resists denting well under everyday traffic. The pale colour is good at hiding tracked-in sand, which in a coastal house earns its keep, though dark grit shows more than it would on a darker species.
