Native Spotted Gum

Native Spotted Gum is the most dramatic floor in this range and one of the most striking timbers available in Australia. The veneer carries the species' full colour swing, from pale orange-brown through to deep chocolate, sometimes across a single board, with the wavy interlocked grain that gives Spotted Gum its characteristic shimmer under raking light.

This is a floor with genuine presence. In a large open-plan space with plenty of natural light it looks generous and expensive. In a small, dim room it can be overwhelming — the contrast that makes it beautiful in one setting makes it busy in another.

It is also exceptionally hard-wearing. Spotted Gum is one of the denser Australian commercial hardwoods, which makes it a sound choice for hallways, entries and any household where the floor takes a beating. The strong grain pattern is remarkably effective at disguising day-to-day marks; scratches and scuffs disappear into the figure rather than announcing themselves.

Because the colour variation is real rather than printed, expect genuine differences between boxes. That is the nature of the timber, not a defect. We lay these floors by opening several boxes at once and mixing boards as we go, so the variation distributes evenly across the room instead of pooling in patches.
