Heritage Jarrah

Heritage Jarrah is the deep red floor that no other timber convincingly imitates. Western Australian Jarrah runs from rich russet through to a dark, almost purple-brown, and it holds that colour with a saturation that stains and decors consistently fail to reproduce.

It is a floor with strong period associations. Jarrah was laid extensively in Australian homes through the first half of the twentieth century, and a Jarrah floor in a Californian bungalow or an Edwardian weatherboard reads as historically correct in a way a modern oak simply does not. If you are restoring a period house and the original boards are beyond saving, this is the veneer that continues the story.

The timber is dense and hard, and the deep colour is very good at concealing wear. What it does show is dust and pet hair, as any dark floor does, and it will read heavier in a small room than a pale board would.

Jarrah's colour deepens and enriches with UV exposure over the first year or two rather than fading, so expect the floor to settle into itself. Where a rug sits over it for a long period, the covered timber will lighten relative to the exposed area — moving rugs occasionally during the first year evens that out.
