Charcoal Shale

Charcoal Shale is the darkest board in this range — a deep charcoal grey with only a trace of brown, closer to slate or weathered shale than to any timber colour.

It is a strong contemporary choice and it does something specific in a room: it grounds it. A dark floor gives a space with white walls and high ceilings a base heavy enough to anchor the whole composition, and it makes an open-plan area feel more settled and enclosed.

It works particularly well with black window frames, matte black hardware and pale walls, where the floor and the joinery read as a deliberate pairing rather than an accident. Against warm timber furniture it provides contrast that lifts the timber.

The honest warning with any dark floor is maintenance, and this is the darkest we carry. Dust, pet hair and footprints all show readily, and there is no colour variation for them to hide in. The matte lacquer helps — there is no gloss to throw highlights across the surface — but this floor will want attention more often than a mid-tone. It is a poor choice for a busy family entry and a good one for a bedroom, a study or a low-traffic living area.
