Smoked Oak

Smoked Oak is the darkest and most dramatic floor in the Noble Oak Collection. Smoking is a traditional treatment that reacts with the tannins naturally present in oak to darken the timber from within rather than by laying colour on the surface — and because tannin is not evenly distributed through a board, the darkening is not perfectly even either.

That unevenness is the character of the floor. Some boards go almost charcoal, others settle at a deep chocolate, and the variation across a room is genuine timber behaviour rather than a printed effect. Combined with wire-brushing, the result is a floor with more visible grain movement than anything else in the range.

This is a specifier's floor. In a large, light-filled space with restrained surroundings it looks superb, and it is the obvious choice when the brief calls for drama. In a small or dim room it will dominate, and it needs generous natural light to show the grain rather than reading as a flat dark plane.

It pairs with pale walls for maximum contrast, with brass or warm metals that lift against the darkness, and with mid-century furniture in walnut or teak.

Be clear-eyed about maintenance. This is the highest-maintenance colour here: dust, pet hair and footprints all show readily, and it will want more frequent attention than a mid-tone floor. Everyone who chooses it knows that and chooses it anyway.
