Coastal Mist

Coastal Mist is the palest board in the Peninsula Oak Collection and the one to reach for when the brief is light, airy and modern. The finish takes the natural yellow out of European Oak and leaves a cool, soft grey-cream that reads almost bleached in direct sun.

That cool cast is deliberate and it changes what the floor does to a room. Warm oaks bounce a golden light up onto the walls; Coastal Mist does not. It keeps the light neutral, which is why it suits south-facing rooms that never get strong sun as well as it suits the big north-facing glass on a bay-view house — in the first case it stops the room feeling gloomy, in the second it stops it feeling hot.

It is the natural partner to a coastal or Scandinavian interior: white walls, pale linen, light stone benchtops, timber or rattan furniture. It also works surprisingly well as a counterweight to very dark joinery, where a pale floor keeps a black kitchen from closing the room in.

Worth knowing before you commit: pale floors are honest. Dark grit and pet hair show more readily on Coastal Mist than on a mid-brown board, so it rewards a household that vacuums regularly. What it hides well is dust, which is the more constant nuisance in most homes.
