Blackwood

Blackwood is the deepest and most characterful decor in this range. Australian Blackwood is a genuinely handsome timber — golden to reddish brown, often with darker chocolate streaking and sometimes a fiddleback shimmer through the grain — and the decor chases that richness rather than a plain mid-brown.

The result is a floor with real warmth and depth. Under lamplight the red in the colour comes forward and the room feels enclosed in a deliberate, comfortable way. It is the board to choose when you want the floor to feel considered and slightly formal rather than casual.

It suits period homes and rooms with strong architectural detail, where a plainer floor can read as an anticlimax. It carries dark joinery well, and against cream or warm-white walls the contrast is handsome without being severe. Take more care with cool grey palettes, where the red undertone can sit awkwardly.

The practical note with any dark floor is honesty about maintenance. Dust, pet hair and footprints all show more readily on a deep colour than on a mid-tone, and this is a dark floor. The matte embossed surface helps considerably — there is no gloss to throw highlights — but a household that wants a floor it never has to think about will be happier with Tasmanian Oak or Blackbutt Natural.
