Tasmanian Oak

Tasmanian Oak is the lightest and softest-toned decor in this range. The real timber is a pale straw-to-blond hardwood with a characteristic faint pink undertone, and the decor keeps that pinkish warmth rather than correcting it to a neutral cream.

That subtle warmth is what distinguishes it from the other pale option here. Blackbutt Natural is golden; Tasmanian Oak is softer and slightly rosier, and in a room with plenty of natural light it reads as gentle rather than bright. It is a quiet, unassuming floor.

It is a strong fit for the era of house it belongs to. Tasmanian Oak was laid extensively through mid-century Victorian homes, so in a 1950s or 1960s Peninsula house this decor sits naturally with the original architecture — the timber windows, the simple skirtings, the compact rooms. It also works well in a modern minimalist interior for the same reason it works in a period one: it does not assert itself.

The grain is fine and straight with little dramatic figure, so the floor stays visually calm across a large area. As with any pale floor, dark grit shows more than it would on a mid-brown board, though the fine grain pattern helps break it up.
